Are you about to take the Wonderlic Personnel test or some other variation of the Wonderlic? NFL players are known for taking the Wonderlic, but average Joes and Janes like us also have to take it as part of pre-employment screening or for academic placement. Regardless of why you’ll be taking it, you’ll want to show up prepared, and with a solid strategy for how to pass the Wonderlic test. Fortunately, we’ve got years of experience in this realm and we’re happy to share our Wonderlic test-taking strategies with you so you can dominate the Wonderlic exam when test day comes.
Take Practice Tests
This is first for a reason and we can’t stress this enough – Prepare for the Wonderlic by practicing! Find as many different Wonderlic tests as possible and take them all. More practice means you’ll get a better sense of how quickly you have to move through each question and there will be less of an element of surprise with different question formats and different types of questions. Take Practice Tests With the Clock Running
No Wonderlic study guide would be complete without pointing out the importance of time management. The Wonderlic test is about finding the correct answer quickly, and most people who struggle on the Wonderlic struggle because they have issues with the clock. 50 multiple choice questions in only 12 minutes is not a lot of time – you only have 14.4 seconds on average to answer a question. That said, you may find that some questions take 5 seconds to answer while others can take upwards of 20-30. Learning the specific kinds of questions that are both easy and time-consuming can help with overall time management.
Improve Your English and Math Skills
There are many Wonderlic test tips out there, but improving your English and Mathematical skills are fundamental for increasing your chances of success. A large chunk of the questions you’ll find on the Wonderlic revolve around reading comprehension, vocabulary skills, and basic math. If it has been years since you solved an equation or did arithmetic, you’ll want to brush up on those along with your algebra skills. After taking a practice test, you can go back through your incorrect answers, or identify questions that you spent too much time on and focus on improving those areas.
Don’t Use a Calculator
If you’re practicing using a calculator you’re going to be in for a rude awakening when you actually take the test. Calculators are not permitted, and Wonderlic tests takers are typically monitored (so don’t even think about cheating). Instead write out your math on scratch paper, which is definitely permitted during the test. Math questions won’t get more advanced than using simple algebra, so learning how to jot down numbers and solve the problem on paper will make the Wonderlic math questions go by much faster.
Guess If You Have To
When taking the test it doesn’t hurt to guess on answers, assuming you aren’t doing it on every question. It may actually be the best option in some situations. Once again, time is the biggest enemy so the last thing you want to do is spend a minute on a question that you’re going to get wrong anyway. Whatever you do, don’t finish the test with questions left unanswered. You don’t get bonus points for not getting answers wrong, so if you really are nearing the end of the test and have many questions unanswered then it’s time to start guessing.
Learn How To Get Through the “Fluff”
Many logic questions on the test have a lot of unnecessary information intentionally plugged into the question. “Sally has 3 oranges, Billy has twice as many oranges as Sally, Sarah has six apples, how many oranges do Sally and Billy have combined”. You’ll greatly enhance your problem-solving skills by learning how to ignore information. During the Wonderlic, this is just as important as identifying the important parts of a question, and the best way to refine this skill is by answering practice questions.
Get Enough Sleep
No test taker is in a prime position to be evaluated without the proper sleep. if you want to excel on the Wonderlic test, you must make sure that you are well-rested before the test date. Staying up all night, or attempting to cram hours before taking the test is an exercise in frustration. However, getting a good night’s rest can help you stay alert and score higher on the exam.
There’s only so much you can do to prepare for a standardized test. Know that you are familiar with the structure of the test, the amount of time you can spend on each question and the kinds of questions to expect. It will all be over in 12 minutes, so the one thing you don’t want to do is freak out right before starting.
Wonderlic test prep isn’t particularly different than studying for other kinds of academic exams. But what sets it apart is the short time limit and the associated pressure – particularly when it comes to landing a job. As with every exam, adequate preparation is necessary to succeed. The more you improve your skills and practice, the easier it is to achieve a decent score during the actual Wonderlic test.
